At Hurst Drive Primary School, music is taught in Reception, KS1 and KS2 using the Sing Up Music Scheme.

Children develop their musical understanding through listening, appraising, singing and instrumental work, sharing their ideas about a wide range of genres. They perform regularly as a class to celebrate their progress, and all children take part in weekly singing assemblies, learning and performing a variety of songs together in unison.

Alongside weekly music lessons of 30–45 minutes, children benefit from specialist music teaching provided by a private consultant, working closely with our Music Lead to deliver a rich and engaging curriculum with regular performance opportunities. All children also take part in an annual class assembly for parents and carers, showcasing their musical learning.

Performance is a key part of our provision. Across the year, children take part in Christmas concerts, a whole-school Summer concert, and a Year 6 end-of-year musical production. Our KS2 choir performs within the local community, including at the Festival of Carols at the Pavilion, a local nursing home, and the HMS Gala at the Royal Albert Hall, with plans to collaborate further with local schools.

Our extra-curricular offer includes Steel Pans Club for KS1 and KS2, a Friday lunchtime KS2 choir led by the Music Lead and private consultant, and a Thursday lunchtime Turkish Choir led by the Music Lead and a specialist Turkish music consultant.

We also provide First Access Ukulele lessons in Year 3, targeted guitar sessions, and private 1:1 or small group piano tuition through HMS.
