Mental Health Support Teams in Hertfordshire Primary Schools
In Hertfordshire, our primary schools are supported by dedicated Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs), who work closely with children, families and staff to promote positive emotional wellbeing.
MHSTs provide early help and preventative support for children and young people aged 5–19. They offer timely advice to school staff, work alongside specialist services, and help ensure that pupils receive the right support so they can thrive in education.
They also deliver group work sessions, supporting pupils who may benefit from help with understanding emotions, building friendships, managing low mood or navigating transitions. For parents and carers of primary-aged children, MHSTs offer groups focused on supporting children who may be experiencing fears or worries.
A key part of their role is promoting better mental health for all. MHSTs work with school communities to embed a whole-school approach to wellbeing. This includes workshops, assemblies, staff training and participation in school events.
If you feel your child may benefit from support, please speak to the school’s Pastoral Support, Family Liaison Officer or another trusted staff member. They can make a referral to the MHST or advise on the most appropriate pathway.
Please note that MHSTs are not an emergency service. If you ever feel unsafe or are in crisis, you can contact 111 for urgent mental health advice.
Referrals are made through schools, and children with diagnosed or emerging SEND needs may also be eligible for the service. MHSTs offer support for mild to moderate needs, including guided self-help, low-intensity interventions and parent-led approaches for anxiety and behavioural challenges.
